Let's Play Umineko no Naku Koro ni: Episode 1 Chapter 10
Episode 1 Chapter 10 – Oh, Boy! Murders!!

It's still very much “build an ark” weather out there.

And Genji and Kanon were barely allowed to get any sleep.

Funny. If Gohda were up making dinner, there should be some hustle and bustle from the kitchen area.

And... yeah. Huh. Gohda doesn't mind pushing dirty work off on other people, but he wouldn't just sleep in and let work not get done. Especially not breakfast; you don't get to be that good at cooking without actively enjoying it. Weird or not, though, Kanon's not gonna pass up an excuse to make Gohda embarrassed. He picks up a phone to call the servants' quarters...

He tries a few times, but nothing. The phones are out. Probably just the storm.
Elsewhere...

Natsuhi's up!

Oh, it's the thingy. That reminds Natsuhi she was gonna give Jessica a charm in return. She retrieves an old, fancy hand mirror from a box containing her personal effects.

It's more of a Shinto thing than Maria's preference for Western magic. It's also a legit antique, and not some random plastic toys glued together by a fourth-grader. It's supposed to deflect evil. She equips the +5 Reasonably Non-Shitty Protective Talisman.
Just then, Genji knocks on her door, because apparently she's already needed at the crack of dawn?

Goodness, no, anything but breakfast being late! That's the worst thing that could possibly happen today!

Genji reports on the phones, and the fact that Gohda is AWOL for some reason. Natsuhi is distressed! Oh and... there's some weird shit on your door, if you wanna just turn around for a second...

Yeah, it's... some kinda... prank. Natsuhi's door looks like someone with bloody hands clawed wildly at it, but couldn't get in.

Natsuhi is very upset by this thing that is clearly just an obscene yet childish prank, definitely. Genji will clean it later, but for now they head to the parlor.

Your favorite guest is up already, Natsuhi! Lucky you. She breaks the horrible, traumatic, life-changing news that breakfast will be late, which is just gonna cast a pallor over their whole day. Genji has more to tell her, though...

What the hell? How did they just lose track of five people? Maybe... maybe they're still having the conference in some weird place like the garden or the beach.

It would explain Eva and Hideyoshi being the only ones around, since they ollied out before Rudolf, Kyrie, Krauss and Rosa last night.

Eva entertains the absurd possibility that Kinzo let the vultures move their circle around him directly into his private fortress, but Natsuhi would much prefer to check herself than let Eva do it. Eva asks if Natsuhi could actually persuade Kinzo to have a conversation with her, and, being Eva, interprets Natsuhi's claim that she believes she has Kinzo's trust as a bet. If Natsuhi comes back empty-handed, there's gonna be massive sneering.

But even if Eva's right, Natsuhi at least has Genji's trust and sympathy. He quietly gives her his key to the study. She's never thought of Genji as a huge bro, but she'll have to reconsider in the future.
Whie over in the guest house, Maria wakes up first among the cousins, since she was the first asleep by a wide margin.

And she's a brat about it.

She's looking for Rosa, naturally. They decide to head to the mansion.
Meanwhile...

Natsuhi uses the key.

This is doing what could be cautiously described as going well. He's not in a rant at least. Since obviously the missing people aren't here, Natsuhi tries asking him one last time to come make some kind of appearance.

Nope.

Natsuhi exercises her better judgment and cuts her losses.

Okay that's a kind of weird way to say it, Kinzo, but. Sometimes the old man looks at the state of his family and regrets being such a misogynistic dick for so long.

Kinzo has some very specific values. Ambition and cunning are among them, and there's no shortage of that among his children. But they're lacking in a lot of others. Perseverance. Dignity. Loyalty. When he looks beyond blood and gender and actually judges Natsuhi as a person, it's clear to him now that she's a worthwhile member of his family. Perhaps more than anybody. With that said, she's dismissed.

Of course Eva tried to spy on them. She lays down some solid snark as Natsuhi closes the study door.

Natsuhi's got a new spring in her step. Why should she care about Eva's petty bullshit? She's too busy upholding the honor of the Ushiromiya family.

Almost everyone who's not missing is gathered in the parlor, and apparently Shannon can be added to the missing list. Kumasawa's making breakfast and Kanon is leading the one-man search party. Natsuhi still figures Krauss is leading everybody on some kind of pointless tension-calming camping trip, so she's not treating the situation as an emergency.

When Kanon gets back she goes to oversee breakfast before he can tell her a certain something, though. He didn't find the six missing people, but he did find something... uh...

Kanon gets the key to the storehouse so he can check inside it, and Genji, Eva and Hideyoshi follow him out there.

...Well, there's your problem.

All we can say for sure is that there's definitely no possibility it could be any kind of bodily fluid. Of course the symbol looks kind of demonic, itself... In any case, the damn thing's obscene. Let's just grab some paint out of the storehouse and do a quick fix for now, it can be properly repainted after it stops raining...

…

Let's just dedicate the rest of this chapter to what's going on in the parlor, why not! Umineko no Naku Koro ni? More like THE “NANJO AND THE KIDS WATCH TV” POWER HOUR.

Oh well. Genji's here to fetch Nanjo and Natsuhi. They all dash back out of the house. Nobody says a word to the kids, so of course George, Battler and Jessica follow them (Maria's nine and already watching TV, you can't expect her to just stop watching TV). There'll probably be a fun adventure!

[BGM:Golden Slaughterer]

Inside the storage shed, in plain sight, are five corpses.

They're not just dead. The faces are mutilated to the point that it's easier to identify whose body is whose based on their clothes.

The sixth body can't quite be seen, but it should be pretty obvious who it is. Six people were missing this morning.

Battler is a theatrical mourner.

But if he'll shut up for a minute, there's something George needs to know. Hideyoshi, sparing everyone else a little more gruesomeness, goes to investigate the vague silhouette of the sixth body in the back of the shed alone.

[BGM:worldend]

George's and Shannon's relationship was supposed to be a secret... but Hideyoshi seems to know all about it. He must have tacitly approved, to not tell the family... But above all, he knows that George's last memory of seeing Shannon was a happy one. There's no sense overwriting his final image of her with something this gruesome.

Kanon's in the back with Shannon's body now, too, and he's even quieter than George. It's not like he's not emotional. He's just being Kanon.

George just has to know one thing. Maybe... maybe before this happened, Shannon had time to answer his question. He asks his dad if she's wearing a ring.

Eva. Not now.

With that, Hideyoshi has done all he can for his son.

And George can keep being an adult, too. Somebody has to get the children out of here.

They're about done here, anyway.

Genji moves to cover up the faces for decency's sake, but Eva stops him.

Actually, yeah, all this anguish kind of broke a lot of CSI rules. They've got fingerprints on everything.

Kind of an elaborate crime.

Someone wanted them to find these six victims.
Six sacrifices. The First Twilight has passed.

Also THEORIZING/CALLING IT NOW: given the faceless state of the bodies, at least one of the dead is not who they appear to be.
