Let's Play Umineko no Naku Koro ni: Episode 1 Chapter 13

Episode 1 Chapter 13 – Closed Rooms

That is generally what guest rooms are for, yeah.

Eva and Hideyoshi are living larger than the others, perhaps ironically.

Eva's hatred of Natsuhi seems a little less opportunistic and venomous when Natsuhi isn't actually around.

We interrupt this surprisingly sweet husband and wife moment to complain loudly about “both ya and I.” Seriously? That's not how anybody of any dialect speaks English. LOCALIZE BETTER

Remember how hostilities between Eva and Natsuhi started because they were in a race to have a baby in order to make their family succeed the head? Eva thinks back on her side of it...

Eva admits to herself that maybe the main reason she wanted the succession was greed, at first. But she was making her husband feel like part of her family and securing a good future for her son. That's what she's really wanted for a long time now. Eva might not be a saint, but she loves the hell out of George and Hideyoshi.

Aaaaaaand sympathy gone. Very efficient work, Eva.

So maybe she's a little evil. As far as Hideyoshi's concerned, nobody's perfect.

I think it's about to get a little Mana Dragony in here, and this isn't that kind of VN, so let's tastefully fade to black.

It's like eight now, so they're gonna try to eat something. Genji and Nanjo are playing chess for the hell of it.

And the kids have been up to their own antics.

Genji and Kanon are sent to go see if those two are coming to dinner.

Ruh roh.

There's something under the door...

RUH ROH.

Maybe... maybe they're just really deep sleepers?

It's time for DRASTIC MEASURES

Like ACTUALLY OPENING THE DOOR

But the key is inadequate.

Back to the kitchen with them.

And then back to the guest room. Kanon and Kumasawa first, of course, as Genji has to get everyone else from the parlor.

More blood markings. (Conspicuously, they appeared in about the five minutes since Genji and Kanon first got here.) There can no longer be a shred of sensible doubt.

Kanon cuts the chain.

[BGM: Golden Slaughterer]

Even the murder weapon looks like something a witch would use.

They rush into the attached bathroom, where the shower is still running, and sure enough...

Two more people are dead. A loving couple.

The second twilight has passed.

The cavalry have arrived, and not being in the room yet they're still caught up on the rune and the letter, the latter of which Natsuhi pockets to read later.

I'm gonna save Nanjo some time. These spooky-shit-tastic weapons are called stakes.

Natsuhi naturally didn't like Eva, but she'd never have wished for something like this...

Shit.

George charges into the room.

He is having a difficult day.

Now's not the time to play “who has the most reason to mourn,” but George quantifiably wins.

But Battler still wants to be the one to avenge all this carnage. He's gonna find the killer and... what, cry on them?

By the way, there's more going on.

Something smells like the devil's molten ass, suddenly, all throughout the mansion.

But what can you do. More importantly, we're overdue for talking about mystery!

There's a thing about the door being chain-locked... you can't do it from the outside. Same as windows. So in an empty room with two dead bodies and no other exits, who the fuck set the chain?

The concept of a closed room, also known as a locked room, came up earlier, when Eva was accusing Natsuhi, but Battler explained that that wasn't a true example. It's a trapping of mystery novels, and it's about what it sounds like—a room that you can prove nobody could have left. With the chain set from the inside, the killer couldn't have left the room after killing Eva and Hideyoshi... yet they weren't in there. That's impossible.

And of course, there's the simple fact that everyone's alibi is airtight. Even if someone could have hidden under the bed or something with all that commotion, nobody else could have been inside the room until Kanon cut the chain, right?

This is also overtly impossible. The bodies are nowhere near the door. Hell, one of them was past another door to the bathroom.

There's... no way a human could have committed this crime.

Beatrice really did answer his challenge. Good job giving her ideas, Battler!

Shut the hell up, Maria. Battler has had it up to HERE with your spooky shit.

He's not really hitting her like Rosa. Just gentle bops on the head.

Well, that fits. What else?

None of them are ready to accept this witch nonsense just yet. So what if it seems impossible for a human? Battler's prepared to try and figure out the trick.

This battle of wits is just beginning.
