Episode 3 Chapter 12 – There's Gold In That There Island!

Eva has snuck out of the guest house. She's headed to the location given by the answer to the epitaph.

And she's there. The hidden door, in its unspecified location on the island, leads to an underground tunnel. She turns the lights on.

She could close the door behind her for... privacy I guess, but it's not necessary enough to be a good idea.

It's a long, dank, neglected passage. I suspect Eva may have been expecting something more Indiana Jones, but all she gets is Resident Evil. Better keep your gun raised in case there are zombies down here—I mean, would you really put that past Kinzo?

But can the legend really be true? What's on the other side of this door?

The ritz, is what. We're in the basement of Kuwadorian, I'd guess.

But what about the

THAT YES

Gold's an impressive-looking thing. Even if you're not typically the money-obsessed type, there's a point at which a large amount of it is breathtaking to behold. A sight that can short-circuit your brain.
This is that amount of gold times a hundred.

There's enough gold here that I doubt you could load it into the back of a truck without crushing the suspension, and that's assuming it would even fit by volume. Riches that can only be described as totally preposterous.

And it's all for Eva.

All at once, she now has everything she ever wanted. Her victory is complete. What's that? Krauss will be stubborn and refuse to hand over the headship anyway?

Who the fuck cares. Do you even UNDERSTAND how rich she is now? If she has to she can just buy the island from Japan and declare it a sovereign country where being named “Krauss” or “Natsuhi” is illegal.

Okay, so she's objectively gone mad with greed upon seeing the gold. But she still hasn't lost sight of why she wants all this. All her hard work and skill will finally be acknowledged, Hideyoshi and George will want for nothing, and the rest of the world can burn as far as Eva cares.

Okay, I guess EVA can be a witch. In the end, she turned out to be a good witch.

Uhhhhhh actually let's scale this talk back a bit after all. For now, Eva's gonna have to go back to the guesthouse. Can't wait out the storm down here.

ZOMBIE! SHOOT IT IN THE HEAD!

ZOMBIE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO USE WEAPONS! SHOOT IT IN THE HEAD!

ZOMBIE ROSA! SHOOT IT IN THE HEAD!
[BGM: Black Lilliana]

They may be siblings, but we know Rosa better than Eva does. When she's not putting on a mild-mannered face to avoid conflict, she's no less cunning than big sis. She didn't follow her here. She solved the epitaph independently, perhaps only minutes later.

Take note of the fact that neither of them have lowered their guns.

But maybe they don't have to be enemies. Eva just wants to be rich enough to be the head. Rosa just wants to be rich, period. And, well. Greed doesn't always allow people to be sensible about sharing in these situations, but even if they split the gold, they could both afford to live in total hedonism for the rest of their lives and still leave a fortune to their children. Hell, if they were feeling generous, they'd have nothing tangible to lose by dealing Rudolf in. Maybe Eva could eventually even be persuaded to let Krauss have some table scraps, if he and Natsuhi were sufficiently hilarious in begging for it.

Buuuuut let's not get ahead of ourselves with this “generosity” and “sensibility” talk. We're dealing with Ushiromiyas here.

Phew.

They're literally openly acknowledging that the only reason they don't kill each other is it'd be too risky to try and get away with.

Consider the exact previous thing we were talking about, literally one second ago, and reflect on what that means about how much they trust Krauss and Rudolf.

I assume they're going to be very careful about walking precisely side by side, with neither even slightly behind the other.

This may have been a mistake for Eva. She knows firsthand that the sight of the gold can drive a person kind of insane.
Later...

Oh, I don't think they'll find it too hard to be tense. Even aside from their altercation earlier, they do know there's a murderer on the loose.

Regardless, Eva made out like a... okay, I don't think anybody's ever stolen twelve and a half billion yen and been labeled just a “bandit” for it. That's more the white collar level of crime.

It is conceivable that Rosa is being passive-aggressive here. She just really really needs to pay off her debts.

Now's not the best time to clue them in. Not just because of the murders, but the storm. Eva can't shake the feeling that Krauss and Rudolf could fuck everything up while they're all stuck on Rokkenjima.

A precaution which is in no way related to any kind of ideas Eva could possibly have about keeping all the gold for herself.

Rosa's got a very good point. They had an accord. And even if Eva doesn't really care about playing fair, which she doesn't, it'd give Krauss a lot of leverage against her for later.

Counterpoint: if they don't form a plan to defang Krauss before letting him know where the gold is, they absolutely do not have the legal ability to keep him from taking it all. Kinzo didn't write a will in this fragment. The island and everything on it belongs to Krauss.

So it's blackmail for Rosa. The only altenatives are to trust either Krauss or Eva, both of whom are virtually guaranteed to leave her with nothing given the opportunity.
Aren't family bonds charming?

Eva's response to Rosa's suspicion is a high-minded and eloquent “C'moooooooooooooonnnnnnn!”

Maybe they should continue this not-at-all-tense debate inside or something though.

If the parents have seemed strangely nonchalant about the murders while Nanjo and the kids weren't around, this would be why.

I guess if the eyewitnesses are so skepticaoh wait Kinzo, Shannon, Kanon, Genji, Gohda and Kumasawa are dead.

For people who can't hear the red truth, it's a reasonablish conclusion to draw. Would you put something so macabre, impractical, and largely unnecessary past Kinzo? I damn well hope not.

But Eva's not changing her mind for someone like you, Rosa.

This is quickly devolving into “yuh-huh/nuh-uh” territory.

You can trust Eva, right, Rosa?

Right.

As soon as the uminekos naku, she's on her own. But it shouldn't be a problem.

Right. Because who needs that much gold, for any realistic reason? Spreading the wealth was Eva's plan all along.

But not EVA's.
